***Don’t forget to check out my cookbook giveaway. You too can learn how to cook. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. It will even open in a new window so you don’t lose your place (here at Small Town Mommy, we are all about being considerate).*** I have developed a new addiction. That’s right. Luckily, this one isn’t dangerous or unhealthy, just a little expensive. I am hooked on farmer’s markets. You may not even know what a farmer’s market is. I don’t think they have them everywhere. Here in our neck of the woods, farmer’s markets are pretty common. And as I can testify, they are extremely addictive. A farmer’s market is a parking lot (or sidewalk, depending on the town), where a group of farmers gather, once a week, to sell stuff. Kind of like a craft fair for food (I like craft fairs too, but not as much as farmer’s market). Anyway, I have developed an addiction to farmer’s markets. While the Small Town is too small to have one, many of our local towns have them. I have discovered enough in the surrounding towns to hold me for 3 days a week (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). While that isn’t even half the week, it is probably more than enough when you consider that this means I am shopping. For food. How much food does a family of 4 actually need. Friday at the farmer’s market is a challenge since I have Libby around. She refuses to attend farmer’s markets (I guess they aren’t much fun when you believe that vegetables are out to get you). Joanna does enjoy them, but only the ones that offer free samples (she has inherited my philosophy that everything tastes better when it is free). Farmer’s markets let you support local farmers. You can find out exactly where the food is grown (down to the part of town). And, there is something to be said for meeting the guy who grows your green beans. Even big cities can have farmer’s markets. I have been to a big one on the upper West Side in New York City. Farmer’s are willing to travel to sell their stuff. If you have a local farmer’s market, check it out. You don’t have to buy anything and you will probably get a free sample (or 2). It can make for a fun, family activity. |
I love them too but with the garden we grow I rather have one in my own front yard. heh heh
I do take my soap to our town’s attempt at a Farmer’s Market but vegetables come in so late here it’s been mostly me, my soap and a local cop and his wife who bakes some really yummy cinnamon buns. Hopefully it will grow as our growing season comes on.
one of my favourite places to go… we recently found one (sort of) near here that I really enjoy.
Hubby wasn’t so enthusiastic at first, but he likes it too now
i actually love going to farmer’s market too
love their goods, and just like what you said, it feels good to meet the growers.
I love farmers markets too. While I love visiting different ones, I think my favorite is the one that’s just a few blocks away. Perhaps because in addition to awesome produce, they have those giant donuts with sprinkles I like so much.
We have lots of farmer’s markets here and I absolutely love them! We try to go every weekend and buy as local as possible.
There’s actually a great farmer’s market in Mulletville but it’s only on Wednesdays for 2 hours. Talk about time restrictions! But it’s worth it. The food tastes so much fresher. I ate a local raspberry the other day and had one of those “so THIS is what they’re supposed to taste like” moments.
Agreed! We have three permanent markets in the area, and I like to stop in two of them pretty regularly. Not quite the same, except is IS home-grown.
Yep. I love them too, and free food is always good too!
I love the farmers market too. This year, I have been trying to grow my own veggies, but I still have no peppers, and only one cuke so far. So they still get my business.
Ours also has a small time producer of cheese, a baker, and a honey stand, all local. We try to support them all.
I love seeing what unique varieties of vegetables I can find at the farmer’s market. You are right – a lot of the farmers love to give you a sample or two if you are really interested in a certain veggie. Fun stuff!
Looks like that’s a great place to shop.Lucky you to have a place like that.We have a farmer’s market here too and its original concept was similar to what you have there. But now,it has become a mall but it retained its name,Farmer’s Market.
I have yet to go to a farmers market although I do hear great things about them. I’ve tried starting up a veggie garden but it seems I have what you call a black thumb. I’d much rather leave the produce to the pros. And I’m with you, FREE samples are by far the BEST.
I couldn’t bear to give up our town’s farmer’s market. The only problem is it only runs May-October. The county one, which is 2 times a week year-round, is nice and all, but sooooo big.
I think it was a very motherly instinct you have to watch out for that child. It is wonderful!!!!
Farmers Markets are the best. We have a half dozen near us (small city but big on farmers)
We love going to our local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. J-Man not so much since he doesn’t eat any fruits or vegetables, but we drag him along anyway.
