Guess This Appliance

datePosted on 06:42, June 15th, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the problem we were having in the Small Town household with failing appliances and other electronics.  As a quick reminder, my computer imploded, our heat went out, our ceiling fan fell out of the ceiling, our washer started leaking, and our oven died.  You would think we had suffered enough.  Apparently, the appliances disagree.

That led me to a new game.  We are going to play guess this appliance.  You get to guess which appliance died on us this weekend.  If you win, you will get a surprise prize.  The wInner must have a mailing address in the U.S. (I don’t know how to mail to Canada), but please don’t let that stop anyone outside of the U.S. from playing.  I will even offer a few clues…

  • It didn’t just fizzle and die, it went out in a dramatic display during Libby’s birthday party.
  • Nobody got hurt in the dramatic display.
  • It, like the other items that have died (except the heat), is 4 years old (I am convinced that GE either hates me or designs everything to last only 4 years).

So that’s it.  Leave me a guess below.  If more than one person guesses correctly, the winner will be chosen in a random drawing (conducted by the birthday girl since she doesn’t know any of you).  You can get an extra entry if you have an amusing appliance death story (I could use a laugh).  You can not guess if you attended Libby’s birthday party and saw the dramatic display, but you can enter with an amusing appliance story.  The prize will be announced with the winner, but I promise it will not be manufactured by GE.

I’m guessing it’s the Microwave – always dramatic!

I am going to guess the dishwasher, because what fun it would be to have to wash all those birthday dishes by hand. My funny story is from when I was a teenager. My mother had an organ that she loved. I was in nursing school, and had to iron my uniform, before going to school that day. I was too lazy to take out the ironing board, so I used her organ bench to iron my uniform on. I had been warned about this previously mind you. As I was ironing away thinking about nothing, something was burning my hand. I looked down, and the stupid iron cord was on fire, and burning my hand. I quickly, and without thinking set the iron on the organ bench, and unplugged it. You would think I would get credit for not burning the house down, but no I was punished for leaving a big burn mark on the organ bench. Man parents are ungrateful sometimes LOL>

I’d have to agree with Cindi – the microwave! But I also have to agree with you about GE appliances… they never last very long!

Okay I know I can’t play but I am going to guess anyway, now since it was Libby’s party and we know that the dog can eat anything and survive (jsut like mine) I am guessing it was not the dog. But what better to have go wrong then the Oven, there is nothing finer then not being able to finish baking the cake or cooking the pizza when you are expecting a house full-o-kids in less then a few hours!
I say you need to send all those appliances to GE’s president at his office and see what happens :o ) LoL
    Good Luck everyone

I am going to also guess the dishwasher imagining water all over your poor floor.

This same thing having happened to me. Twice. In one month. With new dishwashers. From Sears. I have never bought another Kenmore appliance.

I am so very sorry for your appliance hell. 4 years is just not right. Excepting the dishwasher I got 15 out of mine.

Seriously, as The MInd of a Mom said do a big post, send it to GE. Do another video post. That’ll get ‘em.

Hey, Anne. I am wondering if you have an electrical problem that is causing an electric surge to your appliances (and computer) causing them to explode, implode, etc. Maybe a faulty breaker system. I would contact the electric company and see if they will send someone out for free to test the outlets and breakers or try to find a good electrian. This all seems way too coincidental and you don’t want to have an electrical fire due to faulty wiring, etc.

It’s the microwave! My GE microwave died on me too and it’s only 2 years old!!! Never buying GE again.

    The electric can opener.

Which happened to die just as you fit a can of cherry pie filling in it.

However, this looked like the Death by Stereo from the movie The Lost Boys, with the can opener hopping across the counter, sputtering and shaking as if electrified, losing clumps and chunks of cherry pie filling as it went.

That pie filling looked, of course, like gelatinous blood, freaking out the girls and making their parents wonder just what you needed cherry pie filling for in the first place, when you had a perfectly good vanilla cake with white icing and white chocolate mousse ganache holding the layers together.

    You poor baby….

I do have a GE dishwasher. It came with the house so don’t blame me. AS long as I don’t have to wash the dishes, I’m happy :)
    Good luck!

I’m going to go with blender since everyone else has guessed microwave. I think that would make a fabulous mess at your party.

  11. Laura on June 15th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I was going to say the microwave, but I am changing my mind to a crockpot. Ge happens to have a recall on one that the bottom is made of plastic and it gets too hot and melts.

  12. Kara on June 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

I’ll guess it was your popcorn popper??? That certainly could be dramatic!

Hope the birthday girl partied her heart out anyway :)

Wow, you poor thing. And I’m scared! I have GE appliances too. Ugghh!!

I’m trying to think of what would have a dramatic display….I am going to have to guess microwave.

I’m guessing your ummm wonderful *cough cough* GE microwave.

My home came with a kitchen full of those wonderful brand new GE appliances. From day one the washing machine sounded like a freight train rolling down the tracks when it went on spin cycle. The next to go was my own wonderful GE microwave… the part that makes it heat…. which was under a nice long warranty. Trouble was they wanted me to pay the repair man $50 an hour to come out and replace the “free” part. We had a friend who knew how to fix it… but I had to argue with them on the phone for about an hour to get them to send me the part. Guess what? The new replacement part lasted about a year. My GE Microwave that’s over my stove with the light and the vents is now a nice extra storage cabinet.

Also from day 1… the dishwasher was a piece of crap… all food has to be scrubbed from the dishes or they don’t come clean… not even with Cascade Complete. But that is not all… after about 2 years the heating element broke so it doesn’t dry my dishes either. I have to leave it open over night with the racks pulled out so my dishes will be dry and I can put them away the next day.

And those wonderful plastic racks on the refrigerator door…. they are now super glued and taped together because they broke after a couple of years as well and cost over $50 each to replace.

I will never ever buy another GE item. What’s really scary is that this is the company that is supposed to be making high tech equipment used in hospitals! No wonder health care is so high… they probably have to repair and replace all of their GE equipment on a fairly short time schedule.

My recommendation… by Whirlpool!… or Kenmore from Sears because it’s made by Whirlpool. If I ever can afford to replace my appliances that’s my choice… they last a loooong time!

Oh and the $50 microwave we bought from Walmart has lasted longer than the $200 GE microwave ever thought about lasting!

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about all these failing appliances Anne. dramatic display during birthday party, am guessing it is a microwave? Hope all is well now.

  16. frogmama on June 15th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

    Refrigerator?

  17. Mrs4444 on June 15th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

    I’m thinking noisy dishwasher?

  18. Michelle on June 15th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Oh you poor thing. Wow, four years isn’t very long. I’ve always had nighmares about our ceiling fan falling out on my head. I’ve never actually heard a true story before.

So let me guess was it your dishwasher that decided to die during the birthday party?

That would be my luck. A house full of people and dirty dished and no dishwasher. Hope things stop breaking on you. Sounds like it’s getting expensive. Thanks for stopping by.

    Hugs
    Michelle

Ok, well I am going a different direction then the rest of the cool crowd. I am going with your dryer to be really random, and because I often have laundry going no matter if we have company or not.

  20. Judy on June 16th, 2009 at 11:13 am

My appliances always died during or right before or after a major holiday. Taking laundry out to the laundromat on Christmas Eve is one of my ‘fondest’ memories.

  21. Judy on June 16th, 2009 at 11:14 am

Oh, yes, I guessed dishwasher without reading any of the above.

  22. Lisa (Jonnysmommy) on June 16th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

I’m guessing fridge. I’m not guessing dishwasher because the person above me did and I just saw that and I would feel like I was cheating. Darn my mother and her amazing/honest upbringing! Argh!

  23. Maria@Conversations with Moms on June 16th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

This would totally be a guessing game for me. Good luck.

  24. Stacy (the Random Cool Chick) on June 16th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

I’m thinking garbage disposal or compactor… I’m anxious to read about the ‘dramatic display’… ;)

  25. mrsbear on June 16th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

I’m going to guess the dishwasher, since usually when the fridge dies it is somewhat anticlimactic. It gets warm, your food spoils, the end. I’m envisioning water sprays and soap gurgling forth, but I could be wrong.

  26. patois on June 17th, 2009 at 8:43 am

Dishwasher, spurting water all over the place?

(Though I did like the thought of the garbage disposer going because I’ve been through five in the 13 years with my husband. He blames their demises utterly on me.

  27. Elle on June 17th, 2009 at 9:27 am

I’m going to go wit dishwasher. Mostly because that is my own fear. I love my dishwasher and I put everything in there. I’d throw the kids in there if I could. Anything that works while I take a nap is the bomb! Sorry about all your appliance bad karma.

  28. Chris Casey on June 17th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

How about you put something you shouldn’t have in the garbage disposal, and it launched shrapnel at high rates of speed through out the kitchen?
    That would be cool!

I think “Revolt of the Household Appliances” would make a great movie with Ben Stiller, don’t you?! LOL!

  29. Lola on June 17th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

My guess is Clothes Washing Machine.

My appliance nightmare was a BRAND NEW Frigidaire Refrigerator. Bought it brand new at Best Buy. When the summer months came around the food in the freezer melted, the stuff in the fridge section was warm. I called for repairs several times. Service guy came out, said he needed to order a part, a week later, still no part, call back, oh yeah right, your part is right here. Guy would come out and install it and days later, same thing. After I had gone out and bought food to fill the fridge. Called for service again and the guy tells me (I kid you not), he tells me that “it’s summer, it’s hot, sometimes your stuff might melt, it’s normal”. Say what? Anyway, service guy came out at least 5 times. I ended up having to buy a large dorms style fridge so we could keep cold milk on hand and so on. I lost so much money in spoiled food. Finally I got all tech savvy and went online and emailed a complaint. I got a call a couple of days later, they wanted to replace it. I said no way, I want to buy what I want to buy, not someone elses reject. They offered to buy my unit back and pick up the new dead fridge. They did and I bought a Whirlpool Side by Side which I loved and miss because it was sold with my previous home.
