The Weekend Adventure

datePosted on 08:08, June 8th, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

This weekend was all about the kids.  Ok, if we are being honest, most weekends are all about the kids, but this one was even more about the kids than usual.

We started with Joanna’s ballet recital.  Since she is in kindergarten, she is in the kinder recital which is kids under six.  It is really the cutest thing you could imagine.  Joanna’s group did really well.  We weren’t sure how they were going to do.  They did a performance last week that was a disaster.  Their teacher didn’t show up, so the kids went out on stage by themselves.  They all stood there doing nothing for half the song and then left the stage.  Saturday’s performance was much better.  Their teacher showed up so they were able to follow her through the dance.

I have to admit, I prefer the kinder recital.  The older kids’ recital takes much longer.  There is only so much time I can spend watching other people’s children dance.  Especially children I don’t know.

On Sunday we went to a children’s festival celebrating birds of prey (although there were  surprising number of old people senior citizens there.  A good friend of ours is the director of marketing for the organization who sponsors the event.  She has tried to get us to attend for years, but let’s be honest, birds of prey sound boring.  For years, I have made up excuses had other plans the day of this big event.  This year, we decided to give it a shot.

The girls had a really great time.  There was facepainting, bouncers and lots of animals.  I even got bitten by a goat.  Don’t worry, it was a baby goat so he didn’t have big, sharp goat teeth.  Don’t tell Pricilla, the blogging goat.  I am sure she would insist that I did something to provoke him (I did not!).  Libby tried to get a photo of the goat biting me, but from her camera angle, it looks like I am feeding him something (I guess I was, but it was my finger).

Bobby Kennedy Jr. and Richard Gere were there.  My girls could not have been any less impressed.  Richard Gere was brief, but Bobby Kennedy was very long winded.  And he didn’t even have any animals.  Although, the girls did get to touch the gift his wife got him for father’s day.  I didn’t really understand it, something involving a bowl and bird feathers (I am sure it will become famous artwork someday).

Tomorrow, we will be back for Random Tuesday Thoughts so make sure you check back.  I am spending a lot of time with small children so that should lead to many rants about bad behavior.

I think the best parts of the dance recitals are the littlest dancers. I bet it was adorable. Glad the birds of prey was good. I’m impressed, you’re rubbing elbows with Richard Gere and Bobby Kennedy Jr!

    Wow. What a fun weekend!
I’m with ya- Birds of Prey does not sound all that interesting.

Until I met Mallory and Jillian I WOULD have thought you provoked that goat but now I might just suspect the goat. If it had been mistreated like the two of them I could see it biting you. I am sorry for you and for the goat.

Birds of prey are fascinating. Did you ever just sit and watch a raptor soar? Or better yet, 2 raptors in flight? It’s amazing! We see it here daily and when they battle in the sky it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. Especially when one drops the mouse and the other one catches it in midfall.

Ohhhhh… I am so jealous!! The girl was never a dancer so I never did get to see any of those precious dance recitles. Sounds like a great weekend

It must be so much fun to watch your daughter in the dance recitals. I’m glad she overcame the challenge of the last one with the teacher not showing up.

Watching the youngest girls dancing is always the best part, they’re so cute at that age! Sounds like it was an interesting weekend!

Your comments are off on today’s post (RTT)… I was going to say that an almost 10 year old is perfectly capable of doing her own laundry. All mine do theirs, and life is so much easier…
