Foods I Like That You May Not

datePosted on 10:27, May 1st, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

I am not a joiner.  I tend to speak my mind and usually end up offending someone (usually the person in charge).  Sometimes, I don’t even realize I did it (yes, I am that clueless).  Even in school, I wasn’t a fan of cliques.  Now that I am grown, I want to spend time with the people I like.  Life is to short to waste with annoying people.

This leads me to the fact that I have joined a blogging group.  The group is called Blogging for Fun and was started by Melissa.  So far, I haven’t offended Melissa, but it’s still early.

I bet by now you are wondering why you should care.  If I had an exciting story about offending Melissa, you might be interested, but compatibility is boring (why do you think Jerry Springer is so popular).  The reason I am writing about this is that Melissa wants all of us to participate in weekly themes.  I ignored last week’s theme, but since I am trying to appear agreeable, I thought I better participate this week.

This week’s theme is gross food that I like.  I don’t think anything I like is gross, it is all delicious and wonderful.  But, that isn’t going to make a story.  I guess if I put myself in other people’s shoes, some of the things I like might be considered a little bit ewww.

I am a bit torn so I am going to share 2 things that I love.  One may sound disgusting (not to me, but possibly to you) and one may look disgusting (ok, even I will agree these are not the prettiest food).

For the food that sounds disgusting… french fries with mayonnaise.  I had a roommate in college who used to eat french fries with mayo and ok, I will admit it, I thought it was disgusting.  Then I tried it.  Before writing me off as disgusting, give it a try.  It really is tasty.  French fries are also delicious with both mayonnaise and ketchup.

For the food that looks disgusting, I would have to say steamers.

Even I will admit that maybe they are kind of, sort of, gross looking.  But, they are so delicious, it more than makes up for the way they look.  Yum, just looking at this photo is making me hungry.

Is there any food that you like that others might consider gross?  Let me know, I am always looking for new ways to torture the husband and kids recipes to try.

I like pineapple and tuna fish sandwiches. My father used to make them on Thanksgiving morning when my mother was busy with dinner, and I get really nostalgic for them sometimes. He also made peanut butter and bacon, which isn’t bad either — but I think both sandwich combinations were invented to gross out my mother.

I’m glad someone found a use for my photo, and thanks for pointing out the post. I really enjoyed reading it.

    Lima beans… I love them!

  3. Stephanie on May 1st, 2009 at 10:53 am

I love both of these foods 🙂
So I guess I am no help!

I have heard of frenchfries and mayo and my mom use to make me peanutbutter and bacon all the time as a kid (it was the kid friendly alternative to rubens and BLTs).

I can’t think of gross food that I eat but most of what I make looks gross. I haven’t figured out the eat with your eyes portion of cooking yet. I am going to have to think about this. Maybe a post of my own is in the future?

I have heard others mention the whole french fry and mayo thing. . .I’ll have to give it a try sometime when I’m feeling risky, haha! By the way, thank you for the comment on my blog. It was very encouraging/reassuring to read!

The publicist loves her french fries with cole slaw.

This is her favorite gross food:
you take lightly fried scrapple (only East Coast folks will know scrapple) put a an egg up, on top of it. Then smoosh it all together and add ketchup. Smoosh it some more ’til it looks like dog poop. Yum. Grosses her friends out but she loves it.

I tried clam on my honeymoon 10 years ago. I don’t think I’ll be trying it again. It kind of tasted like dirt to me. LOL! I’m a huge spinach fan. Yummy!! Everyone I know thinks I’m crazy. It’s so yummy cooked with a little salt. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great weekend too.

I just can’t join the love on the second one, but mayo/FF: yes. My sister forced me to try it when she was in high school and it is good. Now I make a combo of mayo and ketchup for my fries. Only way I’ll eat them now.

errr these are actually yummy to me,lol!

I just love french fries and mayo!

  11. Harriet on May 1st, 2009 at 3:52 pm

I’ve been hearing a lot about fries with mayo. Wonder what the attraction is.

  12. betchai on May 1st, 2009 at 5:38 pm

i have not tried french fries with mayo, but since i am not very fond of both, so maybe, i will pass that one. however, i love your steamer :), looking at it makes me really hungry now.

fried and mayo are very Eurpoean! I think the one that gets folks is either, pb and celery or fried cheese dipped in garlic sauce.
    Have a great weekend

I love steamers, used to go and dig them on an Island in Maine.

  15. frogmama on May 1st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

I love steamers. You should go to Portland, Maine and eat a big tin bucket of them while sitting by the ocean. Oops, I see Pete also likes steamers from Maine!

I tried goose liver pate and rabbits legs and didn’t want to like either but both were delicious.

  16. Merry on May 1st, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Mayo and fries are the best. Of course it yucks everyone else out, but it’s their loss.

  17. Leanne on May 1st, 2009 at 9:45 pm

I like french fries with both ketchup and mayo. I think that’s what you said too though. Um, I like Oreos. When I look at the package contents they’re gross. I eat them anyway, which is why I will never be skinny. Now, what was the question?

  18. Posh Mommy on May 2nd, 2009 at 1:07 am

Both those foods gross me out…My hubby loves fries with mayo as well though, so it is something I have to deal with every time we get fast food. YUCK! haha…

  19. Posh Mommy on May 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

oh, and I wanted to add that I also offend people fairly often, and I try SO HARD not to! It just always seems to happen! We are just special, I guess.

  20. Melissa on May 2nd, 2009 at 7:19 am

LOL no you have not offended me, yet. You may not want to know this, but I do not offend easy. You can try if you like, but it is a goal you might not meet. As for your gross foods, I know several people who like mayo with fries. It is not my thing, but I find mayo to be just kind of gross looking. I had a friend who dipped everything in mayo, much like my daughter dips stuff in catsup. As for the steamers yes I find them gross, they remind of big gobs of snot, which is exactly what they look like in the picture. As a nurse, I find anything that reminds me of snot to be quite gross.

  21. mrsbear on May 2nd, 2009 at 8:06 am

Okay, the steamers look gross but I dig some fries and mayo, although I like to mix the ketchup and mayo together for a dipping sauce. I love mushrooms which my husband thinks is gross, other than that I can’t think of anything. I like mac n’ cheese with tuna and hot sauce, I don’t know how gross it is…I like it.

I used to love braunschweiger, but tried it again recently and almost hurled. I’ve never tried French fries with mayo, but I keep hearing about them . . . intriguing. I think I’d probably like them. But there’s something wrong with using mayo as a dip. It needs to be spread. I don’t know.

  23. Lola on May 3rd, 2009 at 10:18 am

I love braunschweiger. (Note to self, put it on the shopping list.)

I really like Mussels. They do look pretty gross. I first tried them at a chinese buffet with black bean sauce. That’s good. Also, very good is mussels in tomato sauce. It makes the sauce delicious.

Another food that is delicious and people think is gross is sushi. I love it.

  24. Maria@Conversations with Moms on May 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I love both foods. I like your writing style, it’s humorous.

I’m coming to you from the 1000 comment challenge.

    Couple of things:

I like to make Ice Cream Blizzards with nacho chips in them.

My Mom used to cook Pigs Brains in a frying pan with other assorted vegetables. (I’m Irish, think Haggis, but far worse)
I wondering what a haggis omelet might taste like.

  26. KindaSassy on May 3rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Chippies and mayo were taught to me by my Dutch friend… yuuuum! Steamers… wonder what the Australian equivelent name is?

I guess it goes without saying that as an Australian, Vegemite is the gross food… but I LOVES it! LOL

  27. Tiara on May 4th, 2009 at 2:53 am

Fries and mayo – totally the best! But I have always thought that I’m in such a reverse situation with other people as I hate sushi and half boiled eggs. It’s weird, I know.

  28. Sue on May 4th, 2009 at 8:08 am

My two sisters always loved steamers, I was never a big fan of them. I may have acidentally tried mayo and fries, not bad. I can’t really think of any foods I like that are gross.

  29. Cascia @ Healthy Moms on May 4th, 2009 at 10:45 am

I love mayo on french fries. I used to work at a fast food joint when I was in high school and we always mixed the mayo with ketchup and dip our fries in it. Yum!

  30. Stacey on May 4th, 2009 at 10:57 am

I can’t believe someone else has had a tuna and pineapple sammie! I like ketchup mixed with mustard on my french fries, also like mayo mixed with chili pepper sauce on them.

  31. EDBlogger on May 4th, 2009 at 11:12 am

I don’t think french fries with mayo is disgusting 🙂 I love it!
I am not a ketchup person so I eat anything with mayo instead 🙂

  32. Signe on May 4th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Try pickled watermelon rinds! Great southern food.

  33. Jill@ModernMommyBLog on May 5th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Pretty much everything I like my husband thinks is gross. He blames it on the fact that he is from Ohio and nobody there eats “weird” food.
    My favorites are…
    artichokes (fresh or marniated)
    edamame
    Picles
    All kinds of olives
    Sushi

  34. Call Center Gal on May 6th, 2009 at 12:31 am

I’m not a fan of mayo so this is gross for me.. 🙂 Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  35. Judy on May 6th, 2009 at 1:21 am

Good list. One of my favorite foods that lots of people hate is borscht. It is pretty and pink. We eat it every Christmas Eve and every Good Friday.

  36. Ana on May 10th, 2009 at 9:19 am

I also enjoy french fries with mayo, and steamers. I love all food. I think probably the one food that other people would go ‘EWWW’ on is chicken livers.

When I was stationed in Korea while in the Air Force back in the 80’s the base snack bar used to sell a serving of french fries with both ketchup and mayo if you wanted. I thought it was weird at first but I once in a while get that craving. Like today!
