Nature Invades a Small Town

datePosted on 20:18, April 29th, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

I may have mentioned, I am not a Small Town girl.  I live in the Small Town, but already have my moving date scheduled for the day after Joanna graduates from high school (same day, if the ceremony is early enough).  Why don’t I like the Small Town?  I don’t like nature.  Nature belongs on the other side of glass (preferably an hour or so drive away for a nice Sunday afternoon).  Here in the Small Town, nature inevitably ventures too close.  When that happens, I squeal like a little girl and run.  We once had a mouse that had me and both girls up on the counter, screaming for Frank.  I once saw a snake and locked myself in the car for 2 hours refusing to come out.

While I don’t typically enjoy nature, sometimes it is not as bad as others (when it stays outside where it belongs).  This is our most recent visitor:

While I am not  fan of nature, he can stay since rumor has it he eats mice.  I hate mice even more than the rest of nature (except snakes).  Maybe I can put together a platoon of owls.  Any ideas on how to attract more owls and maybe train a couple to live in my basement?

Can I borrow him for a short time? I’ve got a recent mouse problem that is freaking me out!

LOL I love your post. While I love nature, I do not like it in my home, or too close. We have lots of critters here, and yes I have had a really big snake on my porch. I really despise snakes.

Have the Harry Potter crew train the owls for you! I’d much rather have the snake than our latest wildlife visitor, a bear. He’s been tormenting us for three summers now!

I love nature but I don’t want to be anywhere near mice and snakes.

I’m not a fan of mice either.
I love the birds except for when I’m trying to sleep and they’re outside of my window welcoming the new day….

I don’t like mice either but the owl, I think would give me the creeps too. nature when too close to us can suck the life out of us too…it tends to be boring.

Sorry I can’t help. I don’t mind the owl either though as I don’t think he’d try to get into the house. I like nature, outside and yeah, a shopping mall a block or two away.

I wish I could trade places with you. I am a small town girl living in a big city. I hate the big city, can’t stand all the traffic and miss nature. But like you I also don’t like mice but that is why we have two cats. When we did live in a small town our cat killed all the mice.

The publicist is a city girl but she has learned to love the country.
That owl will indeed eat mice and any other rodent or small bird it can catch. It will even eat a snake if it can catch one.

The Farm cat Fred brings the publicist all kinds of things like half dead mice and pocket gophers, small snakes, tails of lizards. I am not sure she really appreciates it though….

We had an owl last year; I loved to lay awake and listen to it hoot.

An owl platoon, I like the sound of that. Good luck putting one together. Sounds like you need an owl drill sargeant first.

    Thanks for that hilarious comment!
I was wondering what happened to the doughboy :)

I hate snakes, mice and rats too. Oh and bugs! I hear you on not being a small town girl but living in a small town! LOL

We had an owl that lived near us at our old house. It was so cool to hear him in the middle of the night. Truly a magnificent animal.

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful owl! I would love to see one up close I just want to see if it is as soft as they always look. But I do have to admit I am with you on the mouse the only good looking mouse is on in the snake or owls belly!

Owls are such beautiful birds. What a fantastic bonus that he might eat up all the mice for you. Anything that eats mice is good in my book.

A while back, you commented on my review for the book The Unseen – you said you were interested in reading it. Well, I’m going to run a giveaway for it…the post is scheduled to go up tomorrow (Friday) morning. If you’d like, feel free to enter. The contest actually ends at 9pm Eastern tomorrow…so you’ll have to be quick. Thanks and have a great weekend!

Owls are very urban. They can be found in many city parks, including New York Central Park

I grew up in a small town (or atleast lived there from age 8 to 18) but am not a small town or nature person, either. However I like animals so that is neat that you captured that owl. By the way, there is an award for you on my blog!

I like nature minus, bugs, mice, etc. But I’d love to see that owl. Cool!

LOL at this post! I personally am a fan of the small town life/nature – but NOT of things like mice (or bugs – ewww!) so would love a friendly owl to live close and keep them away from my house!

I hate mice too! That owl is gorgeous! I could handle having him around.

  25. Michelle on May 4th, 2009 at 9:46 am

Very cool picture of the owl. I live way out in the country too, but I never seem to get this close to nature. Wish I could. I really enjoy watching all the wildlife. Though I’m terrified of snakes too. My hubby thinks it’s funny to chase me around with those nasty creatures.

You would not believe but in my backyard, in the City, we have had hawks stop by on the fence, eagles flying high over head. The ones who live nearby are our rabbits (three one afternoon) and squirrels (sp) too many to mention chasing the cardinals and finches and doves. Now our Zip code and the tall buildings we see through the trees tell us we are city dwellers but not in my backyard!!!I A mouse will get in once in a blue moon so the owl sounds nice to me too.
