A Death in the Family

datePosted on 08:19, January 26th, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

Today, the Small Town household is in mourning.  Last night, Libby’s hamster, Nibbles died.  We aren’t sure what happened to him, he was fine in the morning, but when we got home Saturday afternoon, he was just lying there.  Now he was a hamster, so he always spent a lot of time just lying there.  But he was lying outside of his little strawberry house instead of cuddled all cozy inside like he usually did.

He was still moving, but it was obvious that he was very sick.  Now, we had no idea what to do with a sick hamster.  I know there are vets, but where do you draw the line?  When the kids are sick, yes, I immediately call the pediatrician.  When the dog had a seizure, I immediately called the vet, but do you call a vet for a hamster?  Especially on a Sunday night?  I can’t take him to the emergency room.  If he had made it, I probably would have called this morning, but when we got up, it was too late, he was gone.

I know all you organized moms probably already have a plan in place for when the hamster gets sick, but I tend to fly by the seat of my pants.  We had no plan and we didn’t know what to do.

Rest in peace Nibbles, Libby will miss you.

So sorry to hear about that. Pets, no matter what kind, are always tough to lose. Hope all the little Small Towners are doing okay.

It is always sad to lose a pet. I remember how bad I felt when my bird died. It wasn’t even a pet I played with or pet, but I still was sad when it died. My husband and I both cried when our Dickie Bird died too. We miss his morning chirps!

It is not because I am organized but we have had the talk with our son about what will happen if the hamster gets sick and the fact that they only have a life expectancy of 2-3 years (tops). He gets so attached to everything we needed to let him know up front there would be no vet visits for the hamster. I feel for your kiddos though- it is hard to lose a pet. Make sure you give him an appropriate send-off- a memorial service perhaps?

Nah, I wouldn’t have a hamster plan of action either. My condolences. Rest in peace, Nibbles.

My condolences! I doubt, no, I know that I would not have a plan in place for a hamster or fish, so don’t feel bad, it was simply his time.

Bye bye Nibbles, it is sad to hear that you have gone to the big wheel in the sky. Libby will always remember you.
Sorry, no hamster back-up plan in our house, I am so not into them. Cats and Dogs and an occasional turtle for us.

So sorry to hear about the little guy–it’s so hard to lose a pet, especially for a child…

Our dog, the one that’s on his last leg that Katie can’t find–he’s going to have to be put to sleep soon–I don’t know what the heck to tell Kate–it’s going to be tough!

My condolences. We lost one of our guinea pigs before Christmas, and it was very sad for all of us. You get very attached to the little things.

Hopefully Nibbles is up there roaming the prairie, or wherever it is that hamsters would like to end up. Sorry :(

I know it is very hard for children to lose a pet, and I’m sorry you lost you little friend. I am 45 years old and have had both of my dogs for 15+ years, and I know it will be very hard on me when I lose my friends.

Its still just a rat that if you did not purchase yourself and it was running around in your house….well, the end would be the same, wouldn’t it. Lets see how fast you replace it!

it’s always so sad when a beloved family pet dies. I cried for ages when my pet budgie died when I was ten. I hope Libby copes better than I did at the time. Give her time to mourn and perhaps let some time pass before replacing him?

same thing always happens to our hamster. we leave, he’s fine, come back he’s on his last leg. one thing that we did do was change the bedding. sometimes they slip into hibernation because of being too cold and never come out of it if not take care of right away. they also only live for 2/3 years. so far the one we have now has lived the longest. sorry for your lost. been through 5 of them, at least in a year.

Thank you for all your kind thoughts for Libby. She is doing ok. She has decided that Nibbles is in heaven with Meema. We are not planning to get another hamster any time soon because they are a lot of work. I think she thinks that she wants another cat (also not going to happen).

ohh..I feel for Libby. I know how hard it’s like to lose a pet, and not knowing what to do and you know it’s about to die. Same thing happened to our very first bunny. It took awhile before our parents got us another pet.
