Crazy, Suicidal Dog

datePosted on 22:25, December 28th, 2008 by Small Town Mommy

Last night, we went to visit friends for dinner.  When we got home, we discovered that Hamlet, the dumb dog, had gotten into the Christmas chocolate.  You may know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs so, of course, we panicked.  After doing extensive Internet research, we found numerous sources that said that it took an ounce of chocolate per pound of dog to kill him.  Hamlet weighs about 50 pounds (possibly more after all the chocolate) so he would need to have 3 pounds of chocolate.  While we don’t know how much was left, 3 pounds is a lot of chocolate, so we hoped he would be OK.

Just in case, we gave him hydrogen peroxide, which is a common treatment for dog poisoning.  It makes them vomit.  Except for Hamlet.  So he had eaten an unidentified amount of chocolate and followed it up with hydrogen peroxide and still would not thrown up.

The Internet says any symptoms would show up within 24 hours so we are hoping he is OK.  This is not the first time Hamlet has eaten something he shouldn’t.  There was the time he got into fireplace cleaner that we didn’t even know we had.  He found it hidden in the back of a cabinet we don’t use.  Then, there was the time the cats tried to kill him by knocking a Costco-sized bottle of Flintstones vitamins onto the floor for him.  That was when we discovered the hydrogen peroxide trick.  There was also the time he ate 8 corn cobs.  That time, the vet got to be the one to make him throw up.

Luckily, he continues to power through, no matter what he eats. Don’t tell anyone, but I sorta, kinda like that stupid dog and really don’t want anything to happen to him.  Since he seems to be doing well, I thought I would share a photo of Hamlet on Christmas (pre-chocolate).  Here he is…

We’ll be rooting for poor ole’ Hamlet ~ he is cute! I have Muttley, the Black Lab Granddog up on my site ~ been babysitting her for a week while DD25 & fam is in Vermont. Goes home tomorrow. Thanks for the info on Hydrogen Peroxide~didn’t know that & we used to have several dogs!

Oh I hope Hamlet will be fine–it’s pretty stressful when dogs get into things that they shouldn’t. Once our dog at an entire bottle of ibuprofen he scavenged out of my purse–another time he sipped up a bottle of baby oil–I won’t elaborate on how that turned out, but let’s just say it was slippery around our house for a few days!(He’s made it to 15–still kickin’) Let us know how Hamlet is doing–I’ll keep him in our prayers…

Hoping he will be fine. I had a dog die years ago from eating chocolate, but it was a small dog, so it didn’t take much. Also, it sounds like your pooch got into milk chocolate, which is less dangerous.
    Fingers crossed for him.

Okay I must first say that I am laughing so hard I am crying and for some reason I can not stop. He is a very cute dog and I hope that when he dies it is of old age and not of something that he has ingested that is harmful to him. Thanks for sharing this post, I needed a good laugh. Best of luck!

Hope Hamlet is going to be okay. What a cute dog!

  6. Judy on December 29th, 2008 at 8:00 am

Oh, Anne! What a sweet and cute dog. It makes me want to get a dog again though we have sworn off pets in favor of visiting our grandkids. Cats Fred, Ethel and dog Lucy are in pet paradise.

I hope Hamlet continues to stay well for many , many years.

He’s very cute! I’m sure he’ll be ok…we’ve had dogs that eat whole plates of brownies (including the plastic wrap covering them) and been fine. Fat, but fine. Recently we came home to our dog and half a batch less of chocolate chip cookies.

Hamlet is such a cutiepie! I know what you mean, one of our cats is always jumping on the table trying to get at stuff like Christmas chocolate, so I am in a constant state of stress. I’m glad he is fine, and I love his hat.

I hope Hamlet will be OK! He sounds like quite a dog! Very cute too.

    Hope Hamlet feels better!

  11. Daisy on December 29th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Poor Hamlet! Since he did not bomit, I hope he does not get ::whispers:: diarrhea. Feel better soon Hamlet!

  12. Jane Doe on December 29th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

He’s adorable! I hope that he’s ok. My cat eats things he shouldn’t too. His favorite is rubber bands. Go figure. Stupid cat.

Isn’t it amazing what a dog can eat and be fine, but change their dog food and they’re rubbing their butt across the carpet!

  14. Stacy on December 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Awww! Hamlet’s a cutie! (in a big, manly-dog kinda way…LOL!) I hope he’s fine – he most likely will be from the sounds of his previous escapades. And I’ll bet what chocolate he ate wasn’t a whole 3 pounds…since he didn’t vomit, like Daisy mentioned, will probably have diarrhea…that’ll be a fun time! ;)

    HUGZ to you and Hamlet!

Just checkin’ back to see how Hamlet is doing… *little prayer*

  16. The Mind of a Mom on December 29th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Oh Hamlet! You are one Christmas cutie.
Anne I bet if he could point, he would blame the cat again…hehehehe
I heard/read somewhere that it is only dark chocolate that is poison for them. Regardless I hope he is okay and is not begging to get out the door for (the) run(s) :o )

  17. Pam on December 29th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Hamlet is adorable! I am sure he will be fine, but will definitely check back to find out the rest of the story! (Hopefully, there is no sequel!) My cat knocks things off the table so my dog can eat them… Pets… go figure!

moomettesgram, I wish I didn’t need to know about the hydrogen peroxide. We have used it more than once.
Nicole, the baby oil sounds very messy. Yuck!
Joe, I am so sorry to hear about your dog. We would have had lots of tears if something had happened to Hamlet.
Guy’s Wife, glad you enjoyed. I had to wait until we were pretty sure Hamlet was ok so I could make it funny rather than terror-filled.
Duni, luckily, he is doing fine.
Judy, your grandkids are definitely better than a dog. Maybe you can get one when they move back to the US and he can join you on your trips.

Signe, sounds like your dog and Hamlet could have quite the party.
Lidian, Hamlet has the Christmas spirit 24-7. Mostly, the cats get into stuff to try and sabotage him.
Rhonda, Hamlet is the not very bright dog that all the other dogs are nice to because they feel bad for him.
Lydia, thank you for your wishes. Sadly, he is doing better than your whole household.
Daisy, so far, so good. We hope it remains that way.

  20. Small Town Mommy on December 29th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Jane, our cats eat rubber bands too. The kids are always told not to leave rubber bands around.
    Stacy, tell me about it.
Stacy, so far we have been lucky with the diarrhea, I am keeping my fingers crossed. That can’t be good for the carpets.
Nicole, still doing fine, thank goodness.
Mom, somehow, it was the cats’ fault, it always is.
Pam, I think the cats are plotting to kill the dog.

He looks adorable! But wow, 8 corn cobs, huh? That’s gotta be a record!

  22. Toni on December 30th, 2008 at 7:42 am

What a cute doggie! He just thought it all looked so good he would help himself to the yummy stuff LOL. Glad he is okay

  23. Small Town Mommy on December 30th, 2008 at 11:37 am

Ali, the vet was not as impressed.
Toni, he is always helping himself to anything that looks good. The dog has no manners.

  24. Moms At Work on December 30th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Awh. He sounds like our yellow lab who as a pup consumed chocolate, chicken wings, hot sauce, my husband’s glasses, our coffee table and fistfuls of mulch every time we turned our backs.

  25. Dog Helper on January 3rd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Wow… How cute he is! Hope he would be alright now because LOT of choc only will be injurious to a dog.
