Laundry in the Small Town

datePosted on 08:52, September 7th, 2012 by Small Town Mommy

At 46, I have discovered the secret to doing laundry.  It took many years but I now have the laundry under control.  Do you want me to share my secret?  The secret is… have someone else do it.  That’s right, laundry is really easy if you don’t have to do it.

I realize this may not be the solution for everyone but it is working perfectly for me.  I bet you are wondering who is doing my laundry (and if they will do yours).  It’s my 13 year old.

We pay Libby $1 a week to do the laundry and she is doing a great job.  For the first time, we aren’t falling behind.  The laundry no longer creeps down the hall at night to strangle me in my sleep.  I always have clean underwear.

As a control freak, I had trouble giving up the laundry.  I like to control everything and I was worried about losing that control.  But I have discovered I don’t need to control the laundry.  It was easier to give up than I expected.  I like having clean laundry whenever I need it.

I have been doing laundry since I was 13.  That’s 33 years of laundry.  I deserve a break.  Now I’m getting it.

If you had this opportunity, would you let someone else do your laundry?

Never – Absolutely not. No one touches my clothes/laundry but me.

Since I go naked I have no laundry so this is not an issue for me. I would love, however for someone to take care of AbbyGoat for me. Would Libby be interested?

If I could get anyone to do anything at all for me for $1 a week, I’d be in heaven!

For some reason, I have always loved doing laundry but when the four kids were all growing, I was working out of the house fulltime, I lost the ability to keep up. So Michael, our third, did the laundry. I think I paid him a bit more since we had 6 people here. It was great.

When my Mom came to live here 7 years ago, she liked to do her own but in the past couple years, she cannot do the steps and has a completely handicapped accessible shower next to her little room so she has no need to even try to make it to the basement. Now I just do all of the laundry for the three of us but there is nothing really hard when you are home and not working! Good for Libby!

I did sort of the same thing, except that I do my own laundry, and my 14-year-old is responsible for hers and her younger sister’s (although the younger one must provide assistance). When my son lived at home, he was responsible for his own, too. All this came from their failure to ever put their dirty laundry where it belonged. I told them that whatever landed in the closet where the dirty laundry belonged, I would do. Whatever didn’t – well, if they wanted clothes, they would have to wash them.

I found that I also had to institute the rule of not wearing dirty clothes (still a challenge to enforce with the youngest), because they found that easier than washing.

Down to two of the four kids at home and it’s STILL a work in progress…

For a $1 and I could kinda over-see what was going on? Yes. So, so, so yes.

Good plan, mama. Cyber high fiving you, from here.

Yay for Libby. And yay for your laundry being under control. I don’t trust my son to wash my clothes, but he’s totally responsible for his OWN laundry.

Only a buck a week?! You have got it MADE!!!! Laundry is NEVER done in our house… but I doubt it is anywhere. It’s so good you were able to let that go – it will help you and give Libby a sense of accomplishment knowing how much she is helping!

DJ has not learned the art of doing laundry, yet. I told him soon though. He is not looking forward to it. He does get 10 dollars a month to dust every week, clean the bathroom every week including toilets, garbage every night, move heavy things or anything else I ask of him. He also sets, as much as we set, the table every night, and cleans up the table and puts all the table back together after dinner.
