Politics in the Small Town

datePosted on 08:31, February 24th, 2012 by Small Town Mommy

We live in an insignificant state when it comes to national politics.  I know, those of you in Florida are just glad it’s over.  Those of you in Michigan can’t wait until Tuesday.  For those of us in the states that no one cares about we get to just sit here and enjoy the show.

We don’t have the primary until everything is pretty much all over.  I don’t think we even get to vote in our state since everyone else has already decided.  Even with the presidential election, no one cares about us.  Apparently our 7 electoral college votes don’t matter.  I don’t remember seeing a single ad last election season.  Meanwhile, those “swing states” were complaining about all the ads.  I would like to see a single ad.  I can only find them on YouTube.

Now politicians crack me up.  I love how they all try to pretend they are regular guys.  They are politicians.  They don’t know what it’s like to be a regular guy.  They have lobbyists who probably hold umbrellas over their heads when it rains (I had a different analogy but this is a family blog, just imagine it has something to do with going to the bathroom and what happens when you’re done).

None of you are regular guys and that’s okay.  You aren’t inviting the entire country to hang out and have a beer.  You are supposed to be running the country.  I want you to be smarter than me.  I want you to be more diplomatic than me.  I want you to be better than me all around.  I don’t want you to be like me.  If you are like me, I might as well be president.  I want you to be better.

What is your opinion of politicians (please try to watch the language)?

I think I would rather have a regular person since all politicians now a days are scum who only do what is best for those with the biggest checkbook. We should fire them all and start over from scratch making sure to exclude all democrats and republicans.

I worry that their best interest is not that of the good of the country. You really want to believe it but I feel like they tell us what they think we want to hear just to get into office. Once there they can fulfill whatever promises they need to to the checkbooks that got them there. I think its really the small groups, the everyday people who reach out to their neighbor, the local charity volunteers who are the ones that really make the difference. But I guess that’s why we are all here to begin with, to try to make a difference as best we can even if in a small way. I’ll stick to watching things that make me feel good vs watching these guys point at each other and say “you’re worse than me”. Have a great day!

I don’t get real involved in politics on a local scale, I don’t vote in those, but I do vote for presidential elections. Well only the last three actually. But it’s hard when my husband is republican (and his late father actually worked in the NJ state house), and I’m a democrat. It can get kinda…heated…on occasion when we both think we have the right way of thinking.

Power hungry ego maniacs. It would be far better if “regular” ran for office but then, you know, power is quite the aphrodisiac. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” (John Acton)

LOL I told you to move to Florida. I didn’t get to vote either because I am an Independent. Generally speaking they are all liars, dishonest, greedy, selfish and pretty much just all around lame. With that said, I find politics fascinating. It truly is a talent, lol! Your delegates might actually be needed this year, so don’t give up yet. There is no definite real front runner yet.

The publicist would like to know why the Republicans who claim they want less government and less regulation can’t seem to keep their government and regulation out of her vagina and bedroom.

    Was that clean enough?

    They all disappoint me.

Personally I think the republican presidential candidates are all lunatics (well, except Buddy Roemer, but according to a poll he had done only about 10% of the country even knows he’s running), with (IMO) Santorum being the looniest of the bunch. Apparently they think President Obama has “ruined the country”. I’ll take 23 straight months of economic growth over tax breaks for the rich and destroying the government to pay for it any day, thanks.

As far as the process itself, it’s a money game. What we need is a repeal of Citizen’s United and implementation of publicly funded elections. As far as the problem of “our state’s election is so late our votes don’t matter”, I don’t see why we can’t have it set up that all the state primary elections happen on the same day. Like, the candidates get a certain deadline they have to announce their candidacy by, a set amount of time to travel the country campaigning, and then everyone votes at the same time. That way you wouldn’t get one state or a small group of states unfairly influencing the decisions in the others.

my opinion of them is that they are all a bunch of greedy self serving idiots who don’t have a clue what it’s like to be just regular people

I love it – you verbalized exactly what I’ve been thinking – I want them to be better than me. Apparently they’re not listening.

    ;)

Maybe I am the exception that proves the rule, but I love my congressman – he emphasizes the “public servant” part of his job when he meets with us, which he does periodically, and politically is perfect for our constituency. He is also a neighbor who lives about a block and a half from me. In fact, I like him so much, I’d be reluctant to move to another district! I wish more people in public office cared as much about the people he represented as mine does.

P.S. If you are wondering who the heck I am, I am Sparkle’s human. Being a cat, she does not care about politics.

I live in a state that doesn’t seem to matter either…

  14. meleah rebeccah on February 26th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Yeah, I can’t with politics. When one of them graces my television I have only one reaction: *puts fingers in ears* LA LA LA I can’t hear you.

I have to say that the 8.5 years I spent in Nebraska were better in terms of politics compared to now that I’m living in Iowa again…this is because I could care less about politics and yet my state is one of the most important for some odd reason!
