Germfest 2008

datePosted on 10:42, November 21st, 2008 by Small Town Mommy

On Fridays I volunteer in Joanna’s classroom.  They have parents come into the classroom everyday to help the kids with writing, since spelling is not a strength for most kindergartners.  The kids crack me up.  They will be concentrating really hard on spelling something, say, the word fish.  They will meticulously create their F, followed by the i, when all of a sudden, it is like someone waved something shiny in front of their faces and they are completely gone, off into the world of the shiny object to be tugged back down to earth like a wayward balloon.

It makes me feel better about Joanna.  I have mentioned before that she can be easily distracted.  Sometimes, I imagine her like Lassie, trying to tell us something really important, like Libby fell down the well, but suddenly distracted by a dog food commercial.  At least I know she is not alone.

Today, Joanna’s classroom was a giant petri dish.  Kindergartners haven’t yet learned how to keep their illnesses to themselves, so there are germs flying freely around the room.  Since I am a little germ phobic, I had to fight the urge to grab Joanna and run screaming from the class.  But, I made it and even managed to leave her there, probably being distracted by the cute boy who sits across the table from her (he used to sit next to her, but she wasn’t getting any work done).  I, of course, bathed myself in hand sanitizer as soon as I got home.

I am just hoping she doesn’t get sick for Thanksgiving.  We are scheduled to go to my sister-in-law’s for the holiday and I am sure her guests don’t want to be crammed into her small apartment (she lives in Manhattan) with a five year old germ ball.  Ah well, that is what happens when you invite a kindergartner to your home for the holidays.

I am scheduled to go back to Joanna’s class again next Wednesday.  Anyone know where I can get a haz-mat suit?

Don’t forget to enter for a chance to win Purry Logic.  You have until Sunday morning at 8am.

We’ve been nursing colds and such since day one of the big K. I imagine them sneezing and coughing all over each other, completely disregarding all that stuff we teach them about covering their mouths. My throat is killing me right now. Bogus germs. :-(

Hi, Anne: Yes, that is how it is. Today’s paper featured a fighting off germs story written by a regular writer who has three little kids, ages 6, 4, and new baby about how they are washing up when they get in the door from wherever to the tune of two -2- renditions of Happy Birthday. It is the length of time now that I care about since I learned that while at the early ed dept. in SPPS where I last worked. Most kids do not suds up long enough to do any good.
It has to be that long. I am sort of a nut about all of that , too, and I think the grandkids were getting into long sudsings while I was with them, though their Mom is a germ warrior as well.

I love your blog, Anne, but do not get all of the awards and such so bear with me. Love you!

Anne thank you so much for the well wishes and prayers, it means so much to me to know that people I don’t really even know yet care. I am going to love this blogging gig, lol! I hope you and your loved ones have an awesome weekend sweetie.

I think that the first week of the school year should just be teaching the kids how to properly wash their hands and sneeze/cough in a way that keeps their germs to themselves.

Have you passed on your germ ish-yoos to your daughter yet? My daughter gets this horrified, raised eyebrow look when she sees kids sneeze all over. I feel kinda awful for making her nuts too.

And can I come to Manhattan with you? :( See, pouty face! How can you resist!?

LOL about you and your germs! It is so true though.. and it doesn’t get any better in HS… that’s where I work as a counselor and they are forever coming to me like, “ACHOO…(wipe snot with hand).. I don’t feel well….” Then I respond… “what do I look like.. a nurse!” LOL! No really. I point them in the direction of the school nurse or the MAIN office phone NOT MINE! LOL!
