The Ultimate Consumer

My Joanna is not allowed to watch commercials.  We have Tivo, so we are able to record television programs and fast forward past the commercials.  In fact, for a long time, the girls didn’t understand where the commercials came from and when they would interrupt their program, the girls would complain that the TV was broken.

Now occasionally (practically every night), Small Town Daddy and I fall asleep with the TV on.  It isn’t my fault, since I fall asleep first, but he refuses to turn off the TV (do you think that explains my problems sleeping?).  Since Joanna often comes into our room in the middle of the night, she has seen her share of infomercials.  I sometimes wake up with Joanna ready to solve my every household problem.  Every informercial she sees, she says, “We should get that.”

A few weeks ago, we went to McDonald’s (a rare event in the Small Town household).  Joanna got a Happy Meal.  She was devastated that her prize did not live up to her expectations.  She had seen a commercial and…

So, we rarely allow Joanna to watch commercials.  When she does, she believes that they answer our every need.  Wouldn’t it be nice if they really did?

    We take a different approach. Although we usually fast-forward commercials, sometimes it’s fun to heckle and jeer at the silliness.

    No one’s buying what they’re selling!

    You have a great idea there not letting them watch commercials. My boys can recite infomercials from “Debbie Meyer green bags” to “Roll & Grow” and they do it word for word!

    hahaha we still tease my daughter about the “Perfect Pancake Maker.” I don’t know if you remember those, but they were a small two-sided frying pan. I don’t make pancakes often (okay, ever) so my daughter was just in love with that damned thing. We saw one in a store, and she went into the whole spiel. Of course Nana bought her one *BIG eye roll*

    We just saw the ped-egg commercial, have you seen it? It makes me gag every time it comes on.

    Ha Ha. My 11 yr. old daughter loves gadet infomercials. I remember my dad bought the “Slim Whitman Albums” when I was a kid. I was so embarrassed (anyone old enough to know who that was)? The funnest commercials for our house are the ones where the poor people can’t seem to accomplish a simple task (like set up a TV tray) and exhibit such angst! The whole family become mimics and fall on the floor- moan, groan etc. we’re a strange group! LOL

    Yep, we actually let my eldest buy a toy that she had seen on TV, just so she could see what a piece of junk it was. We explained ‘marketing’ to our kids really young. They get it now too – I think. :)

    You are so smart to do that. Right now the toy commercials are killing me! Even my two year old is saying, “Mommy can I have that”.

    We’ve had our share of that…our dd’s finally figured it out for herself, so it’s over with her. 2 more to go! :D

    We love Tivo for that reason. Our kids watched a lot of PBS when they were little just to avoid the commercials.

    Now we avoid them because what they are selling to teens is a lot more than candied cereals and toys.

    I love my DVR for that reason. I never watch commercials anymore if I can help it.
