Facebook, Panic Attacks, and Kindle. What the Hell!?!

datePosted on 11:56, July 8th, 2010 by Small Town Mommy

Happy Thursday!  Since it’s Thursday, I am going to jump on the What the Hell Wednesday bandwagon.  Since I participated on Wednesday last week, I figure Thursday will keep the Blue Monkey Butt sisters on their toes.  Nothing is as good as keeping people guessing (except maybe chocolate covered pretzels).

I think a friend of mine on Facebook has been hacked.  Actually, I hope she has been hacked.  I keep getting messages from her, asking for money.  What the hell!?!  Since we haven’t spoken since she left Connecticut a few years ago, asking me for money is not the best way to rekindle a relationship.

The other night, I woke up at 3am in a panic attack.  I realized I hadn’t gotten back to someone who I thought was waiting for my call.  What the hell!?!  Of course, at 3am, there wasn’t a whole lot I could do about it.  I called her first thing in the morning and, of course, she didn’t realize I was supposed to call her.  So I lost sleep for no reason.

Amazon has introduced an app for my phone to turn it into a Kindle.  While I believe that writers should be paid for their work, I don’t understand why Kindle versions of books are so close in price to actual printed books.  In fact, there are even some that are more expensive.  What the Hell!?!  How can you justify charging more for the electronic version than for the print version which involves paper, printing, shipping, etc.?  It seems to me that since the digital reader industry is so competitive, I would try to charge less for the electronic version.  Of course, I have discovered the wonderful world of free books on Kindle.  So I have been downloading those books that are so old, they are no longer under copyright.  At least it gives me a chance to read all that old literature I would never read otherwise.  One thing on Kindle that is well worth the investment is Small Town Mommy.  You can have it delivered directly to your Kindle to read at your convenience.

Well, that’s it for me.  Don’t forget to visit the ladies from Blue Monkey Butt to find out what is happening with them.

As an avid reader, Kindle has a great appeal to me. But until the library starts offering to put their (FREE TO ME) books on Kindle, I won’t be investing. Can’t afford to buy real books, let alone downloaded ones!

I knew someone who was hacked and kept sending me requests for something, I don’t remember what but she finally got it figured out. As for Wednesday/Thursday the holiday has messed me up so even though it is Thursday it feels like Wednesday.

Lydia, I guess she could have lost her mind, but it seems like she has been hacked.
Vixen, that is why I like the free Kindle books.
Jen, at least you think I am on time. I am glad that someone is on my side.

  5. melissa on July 8th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

That is exactly why I have not bought a Kindle yet. I can only assume that the writers union, I forget the name of it, won’t agree to let Kindle and other e readers use their written material, unless they agree to charge those outrageous amounts of money for something that isn’t even in print.

I hate those 3 a.m. things that pop in your head and keep you awake for the rest of the night.
I don’t have kindle so I’ll have to read small town mommy right here at my computer :)

    It’s Thursday?

  11. Marie on July 8th, 2010 at 11:27 pm

I am going to have this tattooed on my…well on my something, not my forehead though. Maybe I’ll just carry a sign:

A KINDLE IS NOT A BOOK.

It is an affront. I know I am in the minority, but I am generally so agreeable (ok, wimpy), I have to take a stand on something.

    Carry on. :)

I’m not a Kindle user, but I love my ebooks on my Blackberry through Mobipocket reader, I don’t think I’ve ever paid over 7.99 for a book through them. It’s just so much easier to carry around my phone with a week’s worth of books on it, than it is to carry around a week’s worth of real books.

Melisa, I think it is the publishing companies.
Ann, as long as you read, I am happy.
John, that is true, it is green.
    Michelle, was your sister hacked?
Pricilla, that is why I love you.
Marie, that starts a whole philosophical argument of what is a book.

Leigh, I will check out Mobipocket reader.

oh, I believe your friend’s account has been hacked, somehow, like you, i don’t think the best way to rekindle a friendship is by asking money.

  16. Andrea on July 9th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I always enjoy your WTHWs :-)

That hacker thing happened to someone I know, too, so I am guessing you are right ;)

I’m glad that your friend wasn’t upset that you didn’t call her.

I have not tried the Kindle but I agree that it doesn’t seem necessary for books to cost the same. . .but since authors are used to getting paid a certain amount I wonder if this means print version is going to go UP. For me, this would not be good since I prefer real books!

Thank you for the birthday wish to Joe on my blog last week!

  17. Polar Rose on July 9th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Im back in a whole new form – I am a rose! LoL
    It’s meonlydifferent – get it??!! :o )
It’s a long story but it’s boring so I won’t get into it.
My daughter was hacked by someone in her hotmail account. I was able to get it back but it is such a pain when that happens because things like what you said you received were sent out from her account also. People need to find new hobbies :o )

  18. Tammy on July 10th, 2010 at 9:10 am

I thought Kindle was supposed to be less? WTH?

  19. Susan Helene Gottfried on July 10th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

I am with you on e-book pricing — and I’m an author! Even at those inflated prices, most authors make very little per copy. It’s a real shame what’s going on.

But on a happier note, two of my now-three books are free this month. check out Smashwords.com — LOADS of freebies. (and the third book? On sale for half off. Yep. $2.50 for a NOVEL.) I love Smashwords.

  20. Raven on July 10th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I’m surprised the e-version is as much as the printed version. You’d think it would be way cheaper. Go figure.

Those 3 a.m. panic attacks really suck, I wake up with them often for various reasons.

    Have a great weekend!

I’ve heard of the facebook hacking – so I’m pretty sure it isn’t your friend.

My husband bought me a kindle because he thought it would save him money because I spend so much on books. It doesn’t – the books I want are too expensive so I end up buying them at my favorite used bookstore. I guess I’ll have to find some blogs to read just so that I use the kindle for something.

  22. Cynical Musings/ JLandsberger on July 11th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I haven’t got a Kindle….I really, really love my books. In response to someone else’s comments, the writer’s guilds have nothing to do with the price for e-books. They are determined by the book publishers…and ask any writer, some book publishers/publishing company are not our favorite people!
As to your friend, she was probably hacked. I’ve heard of this happening before!

  23. Tina T on July 11th, 2010 at 11:20 pm

I hear you about the Kindle. I added the app to my iPhone ages ago, but haven’t bought a thing because they are so darn expensive. I can get the real version of the books for 1/2 the price of the Kindle version when I go to half.com. I don’t get it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wakes up and stays awake with thoughts about something that I can do nothing about at the moment.

So many of those FaceBook apps that ask if you really want the app to have access to your account are ones that make you vulnerable to hacks. Everyone I know who has been hacked had it happen after adding one of these apps.

  24. Elle on July 11th, 2010 at 11:24 pm

I like the sometimes Wednesday, sometimes Thursday What The Hell Wednesdays. It keeps me guessing. I’m pretty sure your friend has been hacked. I’ve heard of this scam before. Usually it involves them being stuck in a foreign country and they need money. So far I’ve avoided this one. If you ever get one from me asking for money, you know it’s a scam. I don’t have a Kindle or even phone that can become a Kindle so I’ll just have to read Small Town Mommy on the computer.

Thanks for joining us for WTHW!

I wake up having panic attacks all the time and its usually over nothing too!

I think your friends facebook account was hacked too.

And Kindle WAY over charges! I guess people are willing to pay for convenience

  26. Katherine on July 13th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Oh I HATE when I wake up in the middle of the night remembering something… I do that ALL the time. And then I can’t go back to sleep…. I’m right there with ya!

  27. JD at I Do Things on July 13th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Oh, I hate those 3AM panic attacks.

I was surprised to find so many classics available on the Kindle for iPhone. I don’t know that I would actually read a book on my iPod Touch, but it’s kind of nice to have a few on there.

I also didn’t realize some Kindle versions were more expensive than the printed version.

My blog is on Kindle, too, and I ESPECIALLY can’t understand why anyone would pay to download it! But they do!
