Health Insurance in the Small Town

datePosted on 14:10, October 30th, 2013 by Small Town Mommy

A few months ago, I mentioned my extended battle to try to find health insurance.  I finally found something and moved forward.  Then Obamacare happened.  Now we are not going to get into the positives or negatives of Obamacare.  Those of you who have read for a while know that last April I was looking for health insurance and it turned out that I was uninsurable.  I had trouble believing it too.  Obamacare has changed that but it hasn’t made insurance companies any easier to deal with.  I spent 2 hours yesterday, being transferred from department to department at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.  You would think at a big company like that, someone would know what they were talking about.  You would be wrong.

In all that time and speaking with ten people, only one even understood my question.  Just as I was getting completely frustrated (and possibly a little snippy), they sucked me into a completely false sense of comfort.  While she understood the question, she didn’t have an answer.  She transferred me to another department.  Bam!  Another person who didn’t understand my question.  For the record, my question was, “Is my local hospital a provider on the plan?”  It shouldn’t be that tough a question but apparently there isn’t a single person at Blue Cross Blue Shield who knows that answer (I even asked someone if there was anyone who would know the answer and was told, “No (at least they recognize their incompetence)!”

So, needless to say, I have completely written off Blue Cross Blue Shield.  I need my local hospital and no one seems able to tell me if it is part of my plan.  I think I will stick with a company that actually knows what it is doing.  Have you ever interacted with Blue Cross Blue Shield?  What are your thoughts on insurance companies?
